“If you’re acting as a responsible buyer from the very starting point of working with a supplier, it may not be necessary to terminate the relationship at all,” echoes Wright. “There are a lot of brands that operate transactionally in their supplier relationships, they’re not acting as responsible buyers at any point of the relationship and are using poor purchasing practices then walking away when things go wrong. Brands need to investigate whether their own purchasing practices have been a contributing factor to non-compliance or labour and human rights risks, and share some responsibility for what’s happened.” She adds that compliance issues can sometimes stem from miscommunication, particularly when a supplier is receiving conflicting messages from a brand’s CSR and buying teams.Officials Nfl Minnesota Vikings X Air Force Veteran 2 Sided Shirt
Experts stress the importance of shared responsibility — a recognition that a buyer’s practices can cause problems that put pressure on suppliers and lead to inefficiencies or compliance issues. “The aim is to move from a typical contracting approach, which is very top-down, to a shared responsibility regime. The typical contract is based on representations and warranties imposed by the buyer on the supplier, enforced by compliance audits; and if the supplier fails the audit, it is at risk of being terminated and may have to pay damages,” says Sherman. “These kinds of contracts have a counterproductive impact on human rights in the supply chain, because suppliers are incentivised to cheat and outsource unauthorised subcontractors to meet quotas.”
