“Before you buy anything outside, look at what you have inside,” says Naheemah Azor, a fashion designer, stylist, and content creator in Portland, Oregon who creates custom thrift bundles for plus size shoppers. Truly sustainable shopping, after all, is about more than just buying quality, ethically-made, and/or secondhand items. It’s about being intentional with what you need and what you want. Once you see what you have, measure it. Emma Zack, who founded the popular Brooklyn vintage and secondhand store Berriez, recommends getting a soft measuring tape and writing down your bust, waist, and hip so you don’t have to try stuff on in person, or for when you can’t try stuff on online. But you can also measure the clothes you wear all the time, says Victoria Holmes, a Sacramento, California-based stylist and personal shopper who runs her own business, Shop PENNY, that caters to mid and plus size clientele. “I have [my clients] measure clothing that they currently own and like the fit of. I don’t have them measure their bodies,” says Holmes. “Especially for bottoms, because I feel like in a lot of midsize, plus-size bodies, you either have hips, you don’t have hips, you have a smaller waist, or wider hip ratios. “I think it’s the worst thing to go into a shopping trip with no plan,” says Azor. “That’s when you end up over consuming and buying way too much stuff.” She suggests making both a visual plan — like a Pinterest board — and writing down keywords you’re looking for. Low-rise barrel jeans, for example, or a classic Parent Trap-style trenchcoat. Holmes also asks her clients for vision boards, and some even send links to stylish Instagram accounts as references. When you have a plan, it’s easier to make decisions about money vs. quality. “[Look at the] holes in your wardrobe,” Holmes says. “If you’ve been looking for a crew-neck baggy sweater for six months and you finally found it but it’s $40 at the thrift, but you really need to fill that hole, $40 objectively, especially when you’re not reselling it, is not a huge chunk of money. I would say that’s probably worth it price, especially if it’s 100% cotton. If it’s a really good elevated basic, you’re going to wear it several times. One good hack? Use the “search by” function on eBay, with a specific filter. “This is a hot tip. I can’t believe I’m sharing this,” Zack says. “Sometimes you’ll search something and then it’ll be all these random wholesalers from China, and then you get really overwhelmed. So I’ll search by ‘used’ and then it filters out to what is truly secondhand.”
