Sometimes, says Kammel, workers aren’t even aware they are making counterfeit goods. “Maybe they’re working what’s called the third shift where they’re contracted to work the first 16 hours of the day, and then unbeknownst to the brand, they’re running another eight-hour shift with the same people and perhaps in the same standards. So the workers still think they’re making X product. They may not know that one of them is unauthorized.” Alongside the labor issues of counterfeit goods, there is the environmental impact. The materials are also not held to any standard and may contain toxic chemicals – which is part of the reason why they are often thrown into landfills. “Because they’re illegal, they can’t be resold, which is a waste,” says Naiman.
